USFS Climate Gallery - Precipitation and Wildfires
This StoryMap provides an analysis of three variables that influence the area burned by wildfires in the western United States.
In the western United States, wildfires have been burning larger areas of forest in recent years. Increasing fires inflict economic, environmental, and health costs on the United States. Zachary Holden and his co-authors explore the relative influence of these factors. They first identified the variables related to temperature, snow, and precipitation that best predicted area burned: vapor pressure deficit, snow water equivalent, and wetting rain days.
