Extreme Event Game

Is your community ready for an extreme event? In one hour, groups of 12-48 players learn how important it is to build coalitions across all sectors of a community and invest in short-term and long-term resources to make their city more resilient.

This in-person role-playing game gives participants a taste of what it takes to build community resilience in the face of disaster. Players work together to make decisions and solve problems during an engaging, fast-paced disaster simulation. Choose a disaster scenario (flood, hurricane, or earthquake).

Extreme Event was developed by the National Academy of Sciences’ Koshland Science Museum in collaboration with the ResilientAmerica Roundtable. Content in the game draws on recommendations in the seminal National Research Council report Disaster Resilience: A National Imperative and has been reviewed by experts and staff of the National Academies. In addition, the developers tested and refined the game over a two-year beta period to assure that it works well with a variety of settings and groups. The game was developed with support from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the Koshland Science Museum Endowment, and private donations.
